Practise this lesson

Your first Siamese mahjong is a moment to enjoy, and there is still another hand to build. Here's how you keep playing.

Declare your first hand and keep playing

Your first Siamese mahjong completes one of your two hands. Declare its 14 tiles, discard to end your turn, then continue building the other hand.

To declare, check that the chosen rack matches a full row on the card. Select Mahjong for that rack before discarding.

Rack 1 matches a complete 2468 row: 14 tiles ready to declare.

Declared tiles stay fixed

Once declared, the hand stays face up. Its 14 tiles cannot move, and its jokers can no longer be exchanged.

Count only your remaining active tiles: 13 between turns, 14 before discarding. The declared hand remains separate.

Your declared hand stays visible while you continue with the other rack.

Check before you discard

Once you've shown your first mahjong, finish the turn with a discard. Look at your remaining hand to find a tile it can spare.

To earn its value, a completed hand needs to be declared before the game ends. Next, we'll explore why you might sometimes choose to wait.

Remember

Declare 14 tiles. Discard. Play on with 13. The declared hand and its jokers are fixed.
