Why it helps
Another player's discard might be just the tile you've been hoping for.

Practise this lesson

Keep an eye on the other players' discards. One of them might be just the tile you've been waiting for.

Take a useful discard

A call lets you take the tile another player just discarded. You can call to complete a group of three or more matching tiles that your hand needs.

Suppose you're holding two 7 Craks when someone discards a third. If your hand needs that pung, you can call it.

Your pair plus the discarded tile makes a pung.

Call, show the group, discard

Put the whole completed group face up on your rack. This is an exposure. It stays visible and cannot return to your concealed tiles.

The call replaces your draw. After exposing the group, discard one tile without drawing.

Show all three tiles together, then choose a discard.

In TileClack, Claim holds the discard while you choose your call. At a table, say “wait” while you check. Speak before the next player racks a tile, discards or starts a joker exchange confirm.

When you can't call

The group needs to be ready when you call, so you can't save the discard for later or take it just to make a pair. The exception is your winning tile: if the discard completes your whole hand, you may call mahjong, even to finish a pair.

When players compete for a discard, mahjong takes priority over an exposure. Between exposure calls, the player next in turn order after the discarder gets it.

Remember

Call for a complete group of 3 or more, or for mahjong. Show the group, then discard.
